    • Weinberger F, Friedlander M, Hoppe H-G: Oligoagars elicit a physiological response in Gracilaria conferta (Rhodophyta). J Phycol 1999, in press. The first publication to show that oligosaccharides induce an oxidative burst in a marine alga. Preliminary data indicate a strong size-dependent effect on recognition of oligoagars and correlate active oxygen species and halogenating activity in inducing tip necrosis. The idea that volatile halocarbons are toxic to the host cells is debatable.

    • Küpper FC, Schweigert N, Ar Gall E, Legendre J-M, Vilter H, Kloareg B: Iodine uptake in Laminariales involves extracellular, haloperoxidase-mediated oxidation of iodide. Planta 1998, 207:163-171. Laminariales concentrate iodine up to 75 mM, a 150,000-fold accumulation compared to seawater. The mechanism of iodine uptake is revisited by comparing the kinetics in Laminaria spp. protoplasts and tissues. The oxidative conditions in the apoplasm are shown to play a key role both in iodide uptake and efflux. This study also indicates that extracellular haloperoxidase enhances the rate of uptake.

In Proc Brighton Crop Protection Conference - Pests and Diseases, vol 2. Edited by The British Crop Protection Council. Farnham, UK: BCPC Press; 1998:441-448. Laminaran elicits phenylammonia lyase activity in tobacco cells and protects wheat seedlings against fungal infections. The elicitor acts synergistically with fungicides. This observation may lead to new, 'environment-friendly' approaches in plant protection.

    • Littler MM, Littler DS: An undescribed fungal pathogen of reef forming crustose coralline algae discovered in American Samoa. Coral Reefs 1998, 17:144. Together with [6], this report points out that diseases affecting reef-building coralline algae are significantly contributing to the degradation of coral reefs. Next step is to decipher the mechanisms of pathogen virulence in this important environment.

Nova Hedwigia 1999, in press. This paper reports on massive epidemics of heterokont and fungal parasites in several european populations of the brown alga P. littoralis. It suggests that eukaryotic, heterotrophic pathogens may have an important impact on the regulation of algal population dynamics, overlooked by previous studies.
