Acquisition of Ly49 receptor expression by developing natural killer cells
-
- cells expressing none of the three Ly49 receptors studied, or only one of them, resulted in the expression of new Ly49 receptors on a fraction of the cells. Receptors expressed before transfer were stably expressed on essentially all the cells after transfer. The results fulfil a prediction of the 'sequential expression model' of Ly49 receptor expression, in which developing NK cells cumulatively express Ly49 receptors until successfully expressing self-MHC-specific receptors.

Functionally and structurally distinct NK cell receptor repertoires in the peripheral blood of two human donors
-
Valiante N, Uhberg M, Shilling H, Lienert-Weidenbach K, Arnett K, D'Andrea A, Phillips J, Lanier L, Parham P: Functionally and structurally distinct NK cell receptor repertoires in the peripheral blood of two human donors. Immunity 1997, 7:739-751. This paper represents a thorough analysis of MHC-specific receptor expression by large panels of randomly generated NK clones from two HLA-different individuals. The results show that human NK cells express an average of approximately five different inhibitory receptors per cell. The repertoires of the two donors differed strikingly in the way in which receptor families predominated. All the NK clones from each donor expressed an inhibitory receptor specific for autologous HLA molecules, but not necessarily for the other donor's HLA molecules.

Ly49A transgenic mice provide evidence for a major histocompatibility complex-dependent education process in NK cell development
-
b is thought not to react with these receptors). Thus an education process limits usage of multiple self-specific Ly49 receptors by NK cells, consistent with the sequential expression model of NK cell education.
