2. Harrington R, Whittaker J, Shoebridge P, Campbell F. Systematic review of efficacy of cognitive behaviour therapies in childhood and adolescent depressive disorder. Br Med J 1998; 316:1559-1563. This recent study used intention-to-treat analysis for outcome of CBT immediately after treatment, concluding that CBT may be of benefit in mild to moderate depressive disorder in children and adolescents attending outpatient clinics.
3. Reinecke M, Ryan N, DuBois D. Cognitive-behavioral therapy of depression and depressive symptoms during adolescence: a review and meta-analysis. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1998; 37:26-34. In contrast to the above review, this is a meta-analysis of studies of mostly dysphoric adolescents mainly recruited from school populations. It also finds that CBT is promising as a treatment.
4. Brent DA, Holder D, Kolko D, Birmaher B, Baugher M, Roth C, et al. A clinical psychotherapy trial for adolescent depression comparing cognitive, family, and supportive therapy. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1997; 54:877-885. This study is useful as it compares three types of psychotherapies.

6. Jayson D, Wood A, Kroll L, Fraser J, Harrington R. Which depressed patients respond to cognitive-behavioral treatment? J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1998; 37:35-39. This paper is clinically useful when considering treatment.
7. Harrington R, Whittaker J, Shoebridge P. Psychological treatment of depression in children and adolescents: a review of treatment research. Br J Psychiatry 1998; 173:291-298. This excellent review discusses the theoretical basis of treatment and outcome evidence and the prevention of relapse and primary prevention. There is evidence that cognitive behavioural therapy is an effective treatment for depressive symptoms and mild depressive disorders.

9. Mezzacappa E, Steingard R, Kindlon D, Saul JP, Earls F. Tricyclic antidepressants and cardiac autonomic control in children and adolescents. J Am Acad Child Adolesc Psychiatry 1998; 37:53-59. This interesting study looks at the effect on electrocardiograms of TCAs in cardiovascularly healthy children.
10. Emslie GJ, Rush AJ, Weinberg WA, Kowatah RA, Hughes CW, Carmody T, Rintelmann J. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of fluoxetine in children and adolescents with depression. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1997; 54:1031-1037. This important study is the largest randomized, controlled trial of an SSRI in young people and uses intention-to-treat analysis, yielding a positive effect of fluoxetine.

This excellent publication reviews the scientific basis for clinical practice and gives guidelines for good practice. The supplement contains practice parameters for other disorders in young people in addition to bipolar disorder.
