Wilkinson NZ, Kingsley GH, Jones HW, Sieper J, Braun J, Ward ME. The detection of a range of bacterial species in the joints of patients with a variety of arthritides using a nested broad-range PCR Br J Rheumatol 1998, in press. Using a PCR technique that can detect a whole range of bacteria by using primers for the conserved 16 S RNA region, this study shows that many microbes are found in the synovial fluid in different arthritides, including Yersinia in one patient (Yersinia have almost not been detected by PCR to date); the significance of finding many different bacteria remains to be elucidated.
