Bacterial DNA of Borrelia, Chlamydia, and different enterobacteria was found in the synovial fluid of 15% of patients with undifferentiated oligoarthritis.

Arthritis Rheum 1998, 41:845-854. DNA of Chlamydia trachomatis was most frequently found in patients without a specific cellular immune response to this microbe in synovial fluid specimens.

The detection of a range of bacterial species in the joints of patients with a variety of arthritides using a nested broad-range PCR Br J Rheumatol 1998, in press. Using a PCR technique that can detect a whole range of bacteria by using primers for the conserved 16 S RNA region, this study shows that many microbes are found in the synovial fluid in different arthritides, including Yersinia in one patient (Yersinia have almost not been detected by PCR to date); the significance of finding many different bacteria remains to be elucidated.

Arthritis Rheum 1998, 41:855-862. Using flow cytometry, this study shows that lipopolysaccharide and heat-shock protein structures of Yersinia enterocolitica can be detected in peripheral blood cells of ReA patients up to 4 years after infection.
19. Kirveskan J, Jalkanen S, Mäki-Ikola O, Granfors K: Increased synovial endothelium binding and transendothelial migration of mononuclear cells during salmonella infection. Arthritis Rheum 1998, 41:1054-1063. The binding capacity of peripheral blood cells to synovial vessels is increased during Salmonella infection. There was a lag period of up to 5 weeks until Salmonella antigens could be detected in peripheral blood cells.

Br J Rheumatol 1998, 37:784-788. This study shows persistent recognition of Chlamydia, Shigella, and Borrelia but not Yersinia in bacterium-specific synovial lymphocyte proliferation assays performed in 28 patients.

Ugrinovic S, Mertz A, Wu P, et al: A single nonamer from the 60 kD heat shock protein is the target of HLA B27 restricted CTL response in Yersinia-induced reactive arthritis J Immunol 1997, 159:5715-5723. This is the first study to show an HLA B27-restricted CD8+ synovial cellular immune response to a specific peptide from the 60-kD heat-shock protein of Y. enterocolitica.

Arthritis Rheum 1998, 41:315-326. The 60-kD heat-shock protein of Y. enterocolitica is also preferentially recognized by CD4+ synovial T cells.
