A potassium channel mutation in neonatal human epilepsy
-
Biervert C, Schroeder BC, Kubisch C, Berkovic SF, Propping P, Jentsch TJ, et al. A potassium channel mutation in neonatal human epilepsy. Science 1998; 279:403-406. Along with [16••] this paper provides evidence of a mutational and expressional nature that KCNQ2 is the chromosome 20 BFNC disease gene. It concludes from expression studies that the mutational effect is consistent with haplo-insufficiency

KCNQ2 and KCNQ3 potassium channel subunits: Molecular correlates of the M-channel

The authors argue from expression and pharmacological studies that the two potassium genes coassemble to form a functional channel that explains the molecular basis for the M-current of neurons. A very exciting and important finding.
