Although the results in this study suggest that the infusion of TNF does not stimulate protein breakdown and the release of amino acids from skeletal muscle, the results need to be interpreted with caution because TNF was infused in tumor-bearing limbs. It is possible that the presence of the malignant tumor had already induced changes in amino acid release and metabolism and had altered the responsiveness to TNF-α of muscle protein and amino acid metabolism.
