Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 1998, 95:4613-4618. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of direct in vivo gene transfer of soluble receptors of interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor-α to the knees of rabbits with antigen-induced arthritis. Moreover this study shows that anti-arthritic effects were also seen in contralateral control knees, suggesting that sustained local inhibition of disease activity in one joint might confer an anti-arthritic effect on other joints.
