    • We note that in the case of step bunches, the exponent 1/4 can also result from dominant diffusion across the terraces in combination with a large Schwoebel barrier (see Ref. [10], or B. Blagojevic, P.M. Duxbury, in: P.M. Duxbury, T.J. Pence (Eds.), Dynamics of Crystal Surfaces and Interfaces, Plenum, New York, 1997). However, for the isolated steps investigated in this work, this special scenario can be neglected.

    • Note that the z-height changed, although the values of bias voltage and set-point current were kept constant. However, the absolute change of the true tip-sample separation is not necessarily identical with the extension of the piezo.

    • It is interesting to note that Giesen et al. [M. Giesen, G.S. Icking-Konert, D. Stapel, H. Ibach, Surf. Sci. 366 (1996) 229] did not find a tip-induced perturbation in their investigation of step fluctuations in the same system at various temperatures up to 800 K.
