Very convincing evidence is presented demonstrating that CD46 is the receptor on human epithelial cells for type IV pili of both N. gonorrheae and N. meningitidis, CD46 is a human C3b/C4b binding glycoprotein involved in complement regulation on host cells. Neisseria appear to be coopting a physiologically important host molecule to promote its virulence.
