Syk tyrosine kinase is required for the positive selection of immature B cells into the recirculating B cell pool
-
of outstanding interest. This reports that the Syk tyrosine kinase is associated with signalling via the CD79 molecules, which are linked to the surface immunoglobulin of B cells. Immature B cells are formed in these mice and migrate to the T-cell-rich zone of the spleen but fail to mature to become recirculating cells. This finding is compatible with the hypothesis that signalling through the B-cell receptor for antigen is required for immature B cells to become recirculating cells.

In vivo ablation of surface immunoglobulin on mature B cells by inducible gene targeting results in rapid cell death
-
of outstanding interest. Experiments are reported in which the variable region of the immunoglobulin of a proportion of peripheral B cells is deleted in vivo. These cells die within a few days, implying that periodic signalling through the B-cell receptor for antigen is required for continued survival of recirculating, and perhaps other, peripheral B cells.

Regulation of anti-double-stranded DNA B cells in non-autoimmune mice: Localization to the T-B interface of the splenic follicle
-
of special interest. This paper follows the fate of B cells expressing a transgenic B-cell receptor for antigen with specificity for double-stranded DNA in mice with a nonautoimmune background. In these mice the B cells expressing the transgene make a priming response to endogenous antigen and accumulate in the outer T-cell-rich zone of the spleen. In the presence of normal B cells they fail to mature to become recirculating cells.

Outer periarteriolar lymphoid sheath arrest and subsequent differentiation of both naïve and tolerant immunoglobulin transgenic B cells is determined by B cell receptor occupancy
-
of outstanding interest. This paper studies doses of antigen that can induce priming responses and anergic responses. Anergic B cells are shown, by administering appropriate doses of antigen, to be capable of migrating to the outer T-cell-rich zone of the spleen. Evidence is provided that suggests that certain doses of antigen may induce anergy without loss of capacity to make a selection response, even when normal immature B cells are present.
