This paper describes the discovery of a second oestrogen receptor located on some tissues including the ovaries and the prostate.

This exciting experimental paper explains why oestrogen and anti-oestrogens have the opposite effects in tissue culture cells containing the oestrogen receptor ERβ and AP1 as the response element. Although ERβ looks like the old oestrogen receptor, both molecules act quite differently depending on the particular substance or ligand binding to them. This may explain the tissue specificity of selective oestrogen receptor modulator such as raloxifene.

Tamoxifen has been classified as a human carcinogen based on its ability to induce DNA adducts. In this study, the authors found no such DNA adducts in tamoxifen-exposed endometrium.
60. Hemminki K, Rajanierri H, Lindahl B, Moberger B. Tamoxifen induced DNA adducts in endometrial samples from breast cancer patients. Cancer Res 1996; 56:4374-4377. These authors reported low levels of tamoxifen - DNA adducts in endometrial samples from tamoxifen-treated women. The main difference between reference 59* and reference 60* is that the authors in reference 60* used high-performance liquid chromatography to separate DNA adducts whereas in reference 59* thin-layer chromatography was used in separation of the adducts. The biological significance of these low levels of adducts remains uncertain.
