Reactivation of latent human cytomegalovirus by allogeneic stimulation of blood cells from healthy donors
-
Söderberg-Naucler C, Fish KN, Nelson JA: Reactivation of latent human cytomegalovirus by allogeneic stimulation of blood cells from healthy donors. Cell 1997, 91:119-126. The authors were the first to demonstrate reactivation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in long-term cultures of allogeneically stimulated adherent monocyte-derived macrophages. The cells harboring reactivated virus were found to be CD14 and CD83 positive, thus providing the first evidence that myeloid lineage cells in the peripheral blood of healthy individuals are the source of latent CMV.

Preemptive CD8+ -cell immunotherapy of acute CMV infection prevents lethal disease, limits the burden of latent viral genomes, and reduces the risk of virus recurrence
-
Steffens HP, Kurz S, Holtappels R, Reddehase MJ: Preemptive CD8+ -cell immunotherapy of acute CMV infection prevents lethal disease, limits the burden of latent viral genomes, and reduces the risk of virus recurrence. J Virol 1998, 72:1797-1804. The authors demonstrate antiviral CD8+ cells to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, to accelerate resolution of productive CMV infection, and to result in a lower load of latent CMV DNA in organs, as compared with results in control animals. However, antiviral CD8+ cells were not able to completely eliminate CMV.
