Effect of estrogen on very low-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein subclass metabolism in postmenopausal women

Campos H, Walsh BW, Judge H, Sacks FM: Effect of estrogen on very low-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein subclass metabolism in postmenopausal women [see comments]. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1997, 82:3955-3963. In a kinetic study using stable isotope labeling of apo B100, the effects of 17β-estradiol, 2 mg, on metabolism of subclasses of VLDL and LDL are described. The fractional catabolic rate of all apo B100 containing particles was increased, including small, dense LDL. The study is an extension of the study by Walsh et al. Prevalence of double pre-beta lipoproteinemia in hyperlipidemic patients is influenced by gender, menopausal status, and ApoE phenotype
-
Cohn JS, Giroux LM, Fortin U, Davignon J: Prevalence of double pre-beta lipoproteinemia in hyperlipidemic patients is influenced by gender, menopausal status, and ApoE phenotype. Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol 1997, 17:2630-2637. The presence of double preβ lipoproteinemia (DPBL), ie, both preβ-VLDL (normal VLDL) and slow preα-VLDL (remnants) are a characteristic of remnant accumulation in hyperlipidemic subjects. Men, postmenopausal women, and carriers of the apoE2 allele had a higher prevalence of DPBL.

Effect of postmenopausal hormone therapy on lipoprotein(a) concentration: Postmenopausal Estrogen/Progestin Interventions Investigators
-
Espeland MA, Marcovina SM, Miller V, et al.: Effect of postmenopausal hormone therapy on lipoprotein(a) concentration: Postmenopausal Estrogen/Progestin Interventions Investigators. Circulation 1998, 97:979-986. In an extension of the PEPI trial, long-term (3-year) CEE, 0.625 mg, decreased lipoprotein(a). This effect was not influenced by the addition of a progestin.
