    • Evidence for a clade of nematodes, arthropods and other moulting animals
    • of outstanding interest. Rapidly evolving taxa can confound phylogenetic analysis. Relative rate tests were used to identify slowly evolving representatives of the Nematoda and other phyla. Molecular phylogenies were then constructed using paralinear/LogDet distances, maximum parsimony, Kimura 2-parameter distances, and Jukes - Cantor distances. Support for the Ecdysozoa, a clade comprising moulting animals such as nematodes and arthropods, was high according to bootstrap analysis (from 78-95% depending on the phylogenetic method used).

    • Homeoboxes in sea anemones (Cnidaria:Anthozoa): A PCR-based survey of Nematostella vectensis and Metridium senile
    • of special interest. Twelve distinct homeobox sequences were isolated from two species of sea anemone (phylum Cnidaria; class Anthozoa) by PCR. Maximum parsimony, neighbor-joining, and maximum-likelihood analyses of homeodomains from anemones and other cnidarians support the conclusion that cnidarians possess distinct anterior and posterior Hox genes.

    • The ParaHox gene cluster is an evolutionary sister of the Hox gene cluster
    • of outstanding interest. The authors propose that the Hox gene cluster and the ParaHox gene cluster are evolutionary sister clusters descended from an ancestral ProtoHox cluster. This hypothesis implies that Hox genes by themselves do not constitute a monophyletic gene family. Therefore, whenever one undertakes to establish the orthology of a newly identified Hox-like gene by phylogenetic analysis, the analysis should include both Hox genes and ParaHox genes.
