The authors of this paper studied early cardiac perfusion changes in children with SLE and looked for associations with disease duration, activity, lipid levels, and medications. One interesting observation was made that perfusion abnormalities were more common in patients with shorter disease duration or who had received fewer steroids. This suggests that these cardiac abnormalities may be associated more with disease activity than with long disease duration or prolonged use of corticosteroids as seen in adults. Follow-up of these patients is necessary to establish the long-term risk of vascular disease in children.

The study shows that patients with SLE had a lower allograft survival than did patients with other diseases.

Arthritis Rheum 1998, 41:678-686. This paper evaluates the experience in one center of renal transplantation of patients with SLE, with particular attention to the recurrence of disease in grafted kidneys. The frequency of recurrence was higher than previously reported, but allograft survival was affected in only a minority of patients with recurrent disease.

This paper evaluates the natural history of asymptomatic avascular necrosis in a cohort of patients with serial imaging and clinical follow-up. Most of the patients did not progress over the 1-year follow-up period. Patients with occult findings had smaller lesions. This study helps to differentiate patients requiring intervention from those who can be monitored.

This paper reports the results of a randomized long-term study of hydroxychloroquine versus placebo on flares of SLE. Although the results did not reach statistical significance, definite trends indicate that the use of hydroxychloroquine was associated with less significant disease flares over time.
