Predicting obesity in young adulthood from childhood and parenteral obesity
-
Whitaker RC, Wright JA, Pepe MS, Seidel KD, Dietz WH: Predicting obesity in young adulthood from childhood and parenteral obesity. N Engl J Med 1997, 337:869-873. In this retrospective cohort study, height and weight measurements were abstracted from the medical records of 854 subjects born between 1965 and 1971 and compared to their parents' medical records. Parenteral obesity more than doubles the risk of adult obesity among both obese and nonobese children.

Obese (ob) gene defects are rare in human obesity

Carlsson B, Lindell K, Gabrielsson B, Karlsson C, Bjarnason R, Westphal O, Karlsson U, Sjvstrvm L, Carlsson LMS: Obese (ob) gene defects are rare in human obesity. Obesity Res 1997, 5:30-35. Tissue of 94 adult obess subjects showed no mutations in the coding region of the Ob gene. Severe abnormalities involving the Ob gene, analogous to those described in mouse models, are therefore likely rare in human obesity.
