Demonstration of mechanical connections between integrins, cytoskeletal filaments, and nucleoplasm that stabilize nuclear structure
-
of special interest. Mechanically pulling on integrins distorts the cell nucleus. RGD coated beads were allowed to attach to the cell surface and then pulled laterally, causing nuclear elongation and cytoskeletal reorientation in the direction of the pull. This suggests that the cell is 'hard-wired' and forces applied to the surface are transmitted directly to the cytoplasm and the nucleus.

Rho-mediated contractility exposes a cryptic site in fibronectin and induces fibronectin matrix assembly
-
of outstanding interest. Cell-generated tension exposes self-assembly sites within fibronectin. The application of tension to fibronectin through increased cell contractility or through stretching of the substrate in the absence of cells promotes binding of a fibronectin antibody that normally inhibits fibronectin. These results suggest that tension exposes self-assembly sites within fibronectin
