    • When the adatom attachment/detachment rate is small, a change in adatom concentration fields created by the movement of the step is readily equilibrated by diffusion along the step direction to other parts of the surface, before it has much effect on the neighboring steps. The adatom concentration fields between different terraces can also be equilibrated by direct adatom jumps over steps. However, the idea that the adatoms are equilibrated by diffusion along the step direction is problematic when used with our present model, since we use the same y position approximation in treating the effects of diffusion. Therefore a completely consistent microscopic model to which our model could apply probably requires direct adatom jumps.
