Chipot C, Maigret B, Pearlman DA, Kollman PA: Molecular dynamics potential of mean force calculations: a study of the toluene-ammonium it-cation interactions. J Am Chem Soc 1996, 118:2998-3005. An interesting article showing how computational methods applied to simple model systems can lead to conclusion of general interest. In particular, the simulations reported demonstrate the role played by the environment in cation-π interactions between two solutes, and the results concur with the analysis of phenylalanine-lysine interactions in several protein crystal structures.

Pseudorotaxanes formed between secondary dialkylammonium salts and crown ethers
-
Ashton PR, Crystal EJT, Glink PT, Menzer S, Schiavo C, Spencer N, Stoddart JF, Tasker PA, White AJP, Williams DJ: Pseudorotaxanes formed between secondary dialkylammonium salts and crown ethers. Chem Eur J 1996, 2:709-736. This interesting article shows how the re-examination of old research topics with a fresh perspective often leads to important discoveries in other related fields. In fact, the binding of properly selected dialkylammonium ions by old crown ether creates a new type of pseudorotaxane (a supramolecular entity comprising two or more macrocyclic components threaded by a rodlike component), stabilised largely by hydrogen bonding interactions and, in some cases, by aryl-aryl interactions.

A smart magnetic resonance imaging agent that reports on specific enzymatic activity
-
Moats RA, Fraser SE, Meade TJ: A smart magnetic resonance imaging agent that reports on specific enzymatic activity. Angew Chem Int Ed 1997, 36:726-728. The gadolinium complex of this host when exposed to the marker enzyme β-galactosidase, responds to enzymatic activity by increasing its relaxivity. This because the β-galactopyranose occupies the ninth coordination site of the gadolinium ion, which reduces the relaxivity of the complex. When it is removed enzymatically, a water molecule takes its place (around the gadolinium ion) and the relaxivity of the complex increases.

Saccharide control of energy-transfer luminescence of lanthanide ions encapsulated in calix[4]arenes: A novel discrimination method for the energy-transfer route
-
Matsumoto H, Ori A, Inokuchi F, Shinkai S: Saccharide control of energy-transfer luminescence of lanthanide ions encapsulated in calix[4]arenes: a novel discrimination method for the energy-transfer route. Chem Lett 1996:301-302. The interesting model system is a triamide-phenacyl calix[4]arene derivative which bears, in the phenacyl group, an amine and a saccharide binding group (boronic acid). The excited state of the phenacyl groups is efficiently quenched by the intramolecular amine whereas in the presence of saccharides this amine cannot act as a quencher because the nitrogen participates in sugar binding. By studying the influence of saccharide binding on the emission spectra of the Tb(III) and Eu(III) complexes of this host, the authors concluded that, in the case of terbium complex, the energy transfer occurs mainly from the calix[4]arene aromatic rings, whereas for the europium complex the energy is mainly transferred from the sensitizer.

Water-soluble neutral calix[4]arene - Lanthanide complexes: Synthesis an luminescence properties
-
Steemers FJ, Meuris HG, Verboom W, Reinhoudt DN, van der Tol EB, Verhoeven JW: Water-soluble neutral calix[4]arene- lanthanide complexes: synthesis an luminescence properties. J Org Chem 1997, 62:4229-4235. An interesting paper which shows the versatility of the calix[4]arenes in this field since the lower rim is used for attaching chelating functions and chromophores and the upper rim for the introduction of water-solubilizing groups.

Gallium(III) catecholate complexes as probes for kinetics and mechanism of inversion and isomerization of siderophore complexes
-
Kersting B, Telford JR, Meyer M, Raymond KN: Gallium(III) catecholate complexes as probes for kinetics and mechanism of inversion and isomerization of siderophore complexes. J Am Chem Soc 1996, 118:5712-5721. An article of fundamental importance which, for the first time, tackles the problem of the stereospecific biological activity of enterobactin using simple diamagnetic tricathecolate gallium(III) complexes as model. By determining the kinetic parameters for the Δ-Λ isomerization process in these complexes, the authors propose a possible new model for the observed specificity of iron delivery.

Fluorescently-labeled ferrichrome analogs as probes for receptor-mediated microbial iron uptake
-
Weizman H, Ardon O, Mester B, Libman J, Dwir O, Hadar Y, Chen Y, Shanzer A: Fluorescently-labeled ferrichrome analogs as probes for receptor-mediated microbial iron uptake. J Am Chem Soc 1996, 118:12368-12375. An interesting application of fluorescent siderophores. Incubation of Pseudomonas putida with iron(III)-loaded (and therefore nonfluorescent) siderophores causes a build-up of the label's fluorescence in culture medium. These observations provide direct evidence for a shuttle-mechanism of iron delivery, where the fluorescent, iron-unloaded, carrier is released to the medium. Further experiments demonstrate that these synthetic siderophores exhibit high specificity by distinguishing between different Pseudomonas species.
