In a further development, combinatorial biology holds the potential to produce novel secondary metabolites by the combination of pathways, induced by genetic manipulation of microorganisms of both marine and terrestrial origins. The resulting lead candidates would be expected to enter the IDV scale at a relatively high level. For a synopsis of combinatorial biology see: C&E News, 2 Oct. 1995, p 9.

The descriptor part -rC, where r describes the number of components that take part in the reaction and are represented in the product, has been adopted from Armstrong's terminology which refers to an r-component condensation as rCC; see ref 14. To be included in the descriptor r, the reaction component must be presentable as a set; thus, the Strecker synthesis, although formally a 3C-condensation of amine, aldehyde and cyanide, is considered a 2C-condensation since cyanide is a unique entity.

    • 44. Reality may deviate from the underlying assumptions so that the members identified by the combinatorial product and their computed order may not be congruent with the actual ones. Practice has shown, however, that identification of the lead compounds by the methods described herein is remarkably successful.

The paper provides an example of library construction in liquid phase and illustrates lead identification and arrangement of the elements in the order of their bioactivities as suggested by the combinatorial product of a set obtained by bioassays of the last partition and two sets based on data of partitions of two reduced sets.
