Epidemiologic analysis of Crohn disease in Japan: Increased dietary intake of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and animal protein relates to the Increased incidence of Crohn disease in Japan
-
Shoda R, Matsueda K, Yamato S, Umeda N: Epidemiologic analysis of Crohn disease in Japan: increased dietary intake of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and animal protein relates to the Increased incidence of Crohn disease in Japan. Am J Clin Nutr 1996, 63:741-745. Epidemiologic study correlating increasing incidence over time of Crohn's disease in Japan with observed changes in diet. It appears that the changing incidence is most strongly correlated with "westernization" of the Japanese diet, with reduced fish oils (n-3 fatty acids) and increased n-6 fatty acids.

Am J Clin Nutr 1996, 63:116-122. Interesting study of effect of dietary fish oil supplementation on tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β production from peripheral blood mononuclear cells from normal human volunteers. Reductions of approximately 30% were seen in both cytokines, providing another explanation as to how fish oils might provide their anti-inflammatory activity.
