Stressful life events, genetic liability, and onset of an episode of major depression in women
-
of special interest. The authors analyzed gene - environment interactions and found that stressful life events interact with genetic liability in producing depression in women. These results suggest that the genetic factors of depression may act, in part, by altering individuals' sensitivity to the environment, thus providing good evidence for the diathesis - stress model of mental illness.

Plomin R, Rutter M. Child development and molecular genetics: what do we do with genes once they are found? of special interest Child Dev. 1997; Although it is difficult and expensive to find genes associated with behaviour, it is relatively easy and inexpensive to use genes that have already been identified to ask questions about development, about the relationships among traits and between dimensions and disorders, about the correlation and interaction between genotype and environmental factors, and about neurobiological pathways between genes and behaviour.
