    • Wilder JA, Koh CY, Yuan D: The role of NK cells during in vivo antigen-specific antibody responses. J Immunol 1996, 156:146-152. The evidence shows that natural killer (NK) cells can facilitate the production of IgG2a in the mouse. As IgG2a is a potent inducer of murine antibody-dependent NK cell cytotoxicity, the results suggest a positive feedback loop in the NK cell system. It remains to be studied whether the production of human IgG1, the equivalent of murine IgG2a, would be facilitated by NK cells.

    • Chambers BJ, Salcedo M, Ljunggren H-G: Triggering of natural killer cells by the costimulatory molecule CD80 (B7-1). Immunity 1996, 5:311-317. An extremely interesting paper, suggesting that B7-1 may be a target of natural killer cells. The results raise the question of when. Is B7-1 always a target, or is overexpression or perhaps redistribution (in spiky dendritic cells) required? An important paper, because it demonstrates that normal structures can trigger natural killer cell cytotoxicity.

This paper raises an important and probably correct point: target structures (and thus perhaps also receptors) for endogenous (circulating naive) and cytokine-activated natural killer cells may be different. Most studies are performed with natural killer cell clones, and the cytotoxic mechanism of endogenous natural killer cells has remained rather unstudied.
