Transfusion 1996, 36:782-788. The most thorough paper in this series of six publications [7-12] characterizing the bacterial contamination of hematopoietic progenitor preparations. It is some-what unusual that the authors found no positive cultures from 291 bone marrow preparations (before the advent of cryopreservation, no complex processing).

Transfusion 1997, 37:423-435. This is an outstanding contribution from a large group of investigators studying a novel psoralen, currently in clinical trials, for inactivation of viruses and bacteria in platelet components. It contains an extensive survey of in vitro platelet properties after photoinactivation and includes a limited study of the survival of rhesus monkey platelets after phototreatment.
