Sources and sequelae of bacterial contamination of hematopoietic stem cell components: Implications for the safety of hematotherapy and graft engineering

Webb IJ, Coral FS, Andersen JW, Elias AD, Finberg RW, Nadler LM, Ritz • J, Anderson KC: Sources and sequelae of bacterial contamination of hematopoietic stem cell components: implications for the safety of hematotherapy and graft engineering. Transfusion 1996, 36:782-788. The most thorough paper in this series of six publications [7-12] characterizing the bacterial contamination of hematopoietic progenitor preparations. It is some-what unusual that the authors found no positive cultures from 291 bone marrow preparations (before the advent of cryopreservation, no complex processing).

Photochemical inactivation of viruses and bacteria in platelet concentrates by use of a novel psoralen and long-wavelength ultraviolet light
-
Lin L, Cook DN, Wiesehahn GP, Alfonso R, Behrman B, Cimino GD, Corten L, Damonte PB, Dikeman R, Dupuis K, et al.: Photochemical inactivation of viruses and bacteria in platelet concentrates by use of a novel psoralen and long-wavelength ultraviolet light. Transfusion 1997, 37:423-435. This is an outstanding contribution from a large group of investigators studying a novel psoralen, currently in clinical trials, for inactivation of viruses and bacteria in platelet components. It contains an extensive survey of in vitro platelet properties after photoinactivation and includes a limited study of the survival of rhesus monkey platelets after phototreatment.
