Is asthma a nervous disease?
-
Barnes PJ: Is asthma a nervous disease? Chest 1995, 107:119S-125S. This review deals with information to support the role of neurogenic inflammation in the pathogenesis of asthma. Particular emphasis is place on neuropeptides neurokinin A and substance P, but with attention to the role of kinins as bradykinin and muscarinic receptors in bronchoconstriction and airway inflammation.

Treatment of steroid-dependent bronchial asthma with cyclosporin
-
Nizankowska E, Soja J, Pinis G, et al.: Treatment of steroid-dependent bronchial asthma with cyclosporin. Eur Respir J 1995, 8:1091-1099. This study of cyclosporine in severely asthmatic subjects demonstrates that subjects on cyclosporine had improved subjective relief in terms of symptoms but no objective benefit with the drug was seen over placebo by the study's end. Cyclosporine had no significant steroid sparing effect by the end of the treatment period.

Lock SH, Kay AB, Barnes NC: Double-blind, placebo-controlled study of cyclosporin A as a corticosteroid-sparing agent in corticosteroid-dependent asthma. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 1996, 153:509-514. In contrast to the study by Nizankowska et al. (Eur Respir J 1995, 8:1091-1099), this 36-week treatment period study demonstrated that cyclosporine had a significant steroid-sparing effect in 16 patients who completed the study. Morning peak expiratory flow rate was also significantly improved by those taking cyclosporine.

Linkage of high-affinity IgE receptor gene with bronchial hyperreactivity, even in absence of atopy
-
van Herwerden L, Harrap SB, Wong ZYH, et al.: Linkage of high-affinity IgE receptor gene with bronchial hyperreactivity, even in absence of atopy. Lancet 1995, 346:1262-1265. This paper deals with an exciting area in asthma, the genetic linking of a particular gene locus with phenotypic expression of that gene complex in the form of BHR. It is of obvious interest as it ties in the high-affinity IgE receptor gene with a pathophysiologic feature of asthma and allergy.
