J Immunol 1996, 156:4290-4297. This report adds interleukin-6 to the list of factors that have been shown not to be required for cholera toxin adjuvant activity. Cholera toxin strongly induces the production of IL-6 by antigen-presenting cells and it is likely that although this cytokine is involved in the adjuvant mechanism of cholera toxin, its function may overlap with other cytokines such as interleukin-5 or -10.

J Cell Biol 1995, 129:489-506. This article reports an elegant use of chimeric mice to study the function of cadherins in the intestinal epithelial cells' growth progression. In this particular case, a dominant negative mutant N-cadherin gene has been placed under the control of a promoter for expression in the intestinal epithelium. Some of the crypt epithelial cells in the intestine express the mutant gene and display the effects associated with the lack of function. Approaches like this one could be useful to circumvent the developmental problems encountered when the gene under study is critical for survival of the embryo.
