17. We used a CCD camera, model 6310, by Cohu, Inc., Electronics Division, San Diego, CA. The experiment was controlled by SPM32 software (version 5.11) by D. F. Ogletree, in combination with a frame grabber board (Data Translation DT2855).
18. Possible ellipticity of the contact area adds some additional uncertainty when comparing results from different experiments.
19. Spring constants used were between 200 and 300 N/m. Calibration was performed using weights and a fiber optic displacement sensor (Philtec, Inc., Annapolis, MD).
