    • A bifurcation point occurs when one (or more) of the vibrational modes orthogonal to the reaction coordinate achieves a zero force constant; i.e., a path down a valley becomes a ridge dividing two valleys. IRC calculations frequently "crash" at bifurcation points, which are common, especially if there is a reduction of symmetry along the path. The present IRC calculations do not "crash".
