Unit cells of 8CB on graphite occur in two chiral forms, related to one another by reflection symmetry. The two forms are energetically degenerate, and all unit cells within a given domain are invariably of the same chirality. For details refer to the paper by D. P. E. Smith (J. Vac. Sci. The fitting procedure was repeated several times for each choice of d, initiated from widely spaced points in the other parameter space dimensions. Each time the minimizer converged to the same solution, offering some assurance that the best-fit values represent the true global minimum on the error hypersurface.
