Since the levers are rectangular, the normal and lateral spring constants can be calculated from simple formulas (see Ref. 21 above) which use the dimensions of the lever. We measure the lever width, length, and tip height using a scanning electron microscope. It is more difficult to accurately measure the thickness of the lever and therefore we determine the thickness using the measured first resonance frequency of the unloaded cantilever, as described by M. Nonnenmacher, J. Greschner, O. Wolter, and R. Kassing, J. Vac. Sci. Technol. B 9, 1358 (1991). The errors in both the normal and lateral spring constants are around 10%.

Electrical conduction in graphite is Ohmic. However, the resistivity is anisotropic, and varies more between samples than is typical of metals. For conduction parallel to the basal planes the resistivity is (Formula presented) and for conduction perpendicular to the basal planes (which is the important direction for the Sharvin resistance component) the resistivity is (Formula presented) See G. W. C. Kaye and T. H. Laby, Tables of Physical and Chemical Constants, 14th ed. (Longman, Harlow, UK, 1973).
