    • The equilibration model is based on the assumption that the distribution of the atom cloud is unperturbed from thermal equilibrium except in the narrow region of optical pumping. The rate that atoms are replenished in this region is then found from a detailed balance argument and the assumption that a single elastic collision is sufficient to scatter an atom in the region of optical pumping out of it
