    • note
    • Strictly speaking, column chromatography sorts compounds not based on their polarity, but on their affinity for silica gel. Although the two concepts are not the same, there is a strong correlation between them and - in the jargon of preparative organic chemistry - the two terms are used interchangeably with polar compounds being defined as having a large affinity for silica gel. For the sake of brevity, we will continue this tradition and use the term "polar" to signify compounds which we experimentally found to elute later.
