This article represents the most recent data on severe maternal morbidity from the CDC. State Inpatient Database data are used to demonstrate that non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women had 2.1, 1.3, 1.2, and 1.7 times (all P < 0.05), respectively, higher rates of severe morbidity compared with non-Hispanic White women. Severe maternal morbidity is recommended as a key reproductive health indicator to be measured at facility, state, and national levels in order to guide creation and evaluation of interventions to address disparities.

In this key analysis, National Inpatient Sample data were used to demonstrate national improvement over a 10-year period in agency-sponsored obstetric quality indicators in both Black and White women. Despite this improvement, inpatient maternal and neonatal mortality and racial disparities in mortality remained constant over the same period of time.

This article summarizes the most up-to-date and rigorously calculated data on unintended pregnancy rate. In 2008, 51% of pregnancies in the United States were unintended. Between 2001 and 2008, intended pregnancies decreased and unintended pregnancies increased (a shift not observed previously), with fewer unintended pregnancies ending in abortion. Large disparities in unintended pregnancy by relationship status, income, and education increased.

This is the most recent data with the largest available sample examining the association between race/ethnicity and contraceptive use. Compared with Whites, Blacks were less likely to use any method [adjusted odds ratio (AOR), 0.65]; Blacks and Hispanics were less likely to use a highly or moderately effective method (AOR, 0.49 and 0.57, respectively). Interaction analyses revealed that younger women had more prominent disparities. These data complement prior NSFG analysis showing that Black and Hispanic women are more likely to use sterilization as a contraceptive method than White women.
