Defensive mutualisms: Do microbial interactions within hosts drive the evolution of defensive traits?
-
May G, Nelson P: Defensive mutualisms: do microbial interactions within hosts drive the evolution of defensive traits? Funct Ecol 2014, 28:356-363. An important synthesis demonstrating how host function can be the result of interactions between its symbionts and not due to 'top-down' host control as typically conceived. Reviews both theoretical and empirical studies of multipartite symbioses and how these differ from simpler pairwise cases.

-
Andersen SB, Hansen LH, Sapountzis P, Sørensen SJ, Boomsma JJ: Specificity and stability of the Acromyrmex-Pseudonocardia symbiosis. Mol Ecol 2013, 22:4307-4321. Using amplicon sequencing to characterize bacteria living on the cuticle of the fungus-growing ant Acromyrmex, Andersen et al. demonstrate the consistent dominance of Pseudoncardia in this niche. This study importantly avoids both the biases of culture-based approaches and surveys using whole ants to specifically identify Pseudonocardia as the dominant symbiont of Acromyrmex ant cuticles.
