Defensive bacteriome symbiont with a drastically reduced genome
-
Nakabachi A, Ueoka R, Oshima K, Teta R, Mangoni A, Gurgui M, Oldham NJ, Van Echten-Deckert G, Okamura K, Yamamoto K et al.: Defensive bacteriome symbiont with a drastically reduced genome. Curr Biol 2013, 23:1478-1484. First report of an obligate intracellular symbiont, Profftella armatura, with a putative defensive function. Typical of obligate endosymbionts, its genome is greatly reduced, but ca. 15% of genes retained are involved in the biosynthesis of a polyketide toxin they named diaphorin. The report also characterizes the structure of diaphorin and demonstrates toxicity to mammalian cell lines.

Mountain pine beetles colonizing historical and naive host trees are associated with a bacterial community highly enriched in genes contributing to terpene metabolism
-
Adams AS, Aylward FO, Adams SM, Erbilgin N, Aukema BH, Currie CR, Suen G, Raffa KF: Mountain pine beetles colonizing historical and naive host trees are associated with a bacterial community highly enriched in genes contributing to terpene metabolism. Appl Environ Microbiol 2013, 79:3468-3475. Among emerging work showing that microbes assist herbivores in detoxifying plant allelochemicals. This study found that several bacterial species inhabiting the guts of mountain pine beetles encode pathways capable of degrading monoterpenes and diterpenes, which are common chemical defenses in conifers.

Laccase detoxification mediates the nutritional alliance between leaf-cutting ants and fungusgarden symbionts
-
Licht H, Schiott M, Rogowska-Wrzesinska A, Nygaard S, Roepstorff P, Boomsma JJ: Laccase detoxification mediates the nutritional alliance between leaf-cutting ants and fungusgarden symbionts. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 2013, 110:583-587. Another among emerging work showing that microbes assist herbivores in detoxifying plant allelochemicals. In this instance, a symbiotic fungus cultivated for consumption by the leaf-cutter ant, Acromyrmex echinatior, produces laccase enzymes, which are passed through the ant gut and onto plant material (on which the fungus is grown) where they degrade phenolics such as flavonoids and tannins.

Herbivore exploits orally secreted bacteria to suppress plant defenses
-
Chung SH, Rosa C, Scully ED, Peiffer M, Tooker JF, Hoover K, Luthe DS, Felton GW: Herbivore exploits orally secreted bacteria to suppress plant defenses. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 2013, 110:15728-15733. An herbivorous beetle uses resident bacteria to trick the food plant into defending against the wrong natural enemy. Bacteria orally secreted into plant wounds elicit the salicylic acid (SA) pathway summoning bacterial defenses, which interferes with the induction of herbivore defenses mediated by the jasmonic acid pathway.
