    • NOTE
    • Our words "care" and "cure, " which are distinct concepts in modern usage, share a common Latin root; in Latin we have "cura" (the noun "care"), "curo" (the first-person verb "care"), and "curare" (the infinitive "to care"). "Cure" originally meant what we mean today by "care." It was not until the early modern period, in the 1600s, that one began to see distinctions made between the cura corporis-the care of the body-and the cura animae-the care of the soul. In part, this separate approach to care of the body and care of the soul arose concomitantly with the birth of modern science with its rational and empirical approach to the physical. With the rise of physiological medicine through the nineteenth and into the twentieth centuries, scientific inquiry focused on the efficient mechanism of the body and the efficient control of the failing body. Among Aristotle's four causes, material and efficient causation took pride of place in scientific inquiry. Put differently, the body came to be seen as a mechanism, a series of movements much like a machine. The soul was relegated to the domain of the mind, a province of those rational parts of the human being. Science itself was an activity of the rational mind, and learned physician-scientists of the day came to see the care of the body as synonymous with the cure of the body-with the meaning of "cure" ultimately becoming what we think of as a cure today. See Bishop, The Anticipatory Corpse.
