The first use of transposable elements as effective vectors for the genetic manipulation of primordial germ cells and the chicken genome that resluted in germ line tansmission to live chicks. Culturing primordial germ cells to give rise to live chicks permits specific changes in particular genes to be made and herelds a new era in the chick as an animal model as an alternative to the mouse.
