Baldwin and Tomesch used trifluoroethanol as a solvent for cationic cyclization reactions used for their synthesis of cyclosativene, which resulted in the formation of a trifluoroethyl ether. S.W. Baldwin, and J.C. Tomesch J. Org. Chem. 45 1980 5052 5057 This trifluoroethyl ether was found to be resistant to reductive and oxidative cleavage conditions. Only by using a large excess of sodium naphthalene developed as described by Sargent could the group be cleaved (Ref. 8)
