Compared to patients with bipolar II depression, the patients with MDD and BPD (MDD-BPD) were significantly more often diagnosed with post-traumatic disorder, a current substance use disorder, somatoform disorder, and other non-borderline personality disorder. Clinical ratings of anger, anxiety, paranoid ideation, and somatization were significantly higher in the MDD-BPD group, and the MDD-BPD patients had poorer current social functioning and made significantly more suicide attempts. However, the patients with bipolar II depression had a significantly higher morbid risk for bipolar disorder in their first-degree relatives than the MDD-BPD patients.
