    • Nørskov and coworkers have proposed a similar mechanism based on DFT calculations (Falsig, H.; Hvolboek, B.; Kristensen, I. S.; Jiang, T.; Bligaard, T.; Christensen, C. H.; Norskov, J. K. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 47, 4835). The primary difference between Scheme 1 and the DFT results is the Scheme 1 assumes that the reaction between surface O atoms and adsorbed CO (the last step in the scheme) is fast. The DFT study found this last reaction step to be fast for Au catalysts and further found that direct reaction between surface bound O2 and adsorbed CO was required to accurately describe Au catalysts.
