The Diego Garcia base ("Dodge City") has been crucial for air support in all US operations in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf, especially in the US/UK invasion of Iraq in 2003, and is also reported to have served as a detention camp for suspected terrorists (D. On 4 July 2001, the UK Government had designated Diego Garcia as an internationally protected site under the 1971 Ramsar Convention (996 UNTS 245), though specifically exempting part of the area set aside for the US military facility.
