The name for the asar[n]arenes, in which n is the number of repeating units, was chosen based on the trivial name for 1,2,4,5-tetramethoxybenzene, which is "asarol methyl ether". The name "asarol methyl ether" stems itself from asarum - the Latin for ginger - and has been given to the compound based on the fact that ginger oil contains many derivatives of 1,2,4,5-tetramethoxybenzene; see:, 2 nd ed., Scott, Greenwood & Son, London (UK)
