Similar broadened reduction waves were also observed in other related platinum(II) terpyridyl and cyclometalated complexes, and a coupling of electrochemical and chemical processes involving an association of a one-electron reduced species with an unreduced complex was suggested. However, in the present system, an intramolecular interaction of two terpyridyl ligands through the bridging backbone was favored based on the grounds of the comparison of the electrochemical studies with the mononuclear complex 2 and the rather large interplanar separation between the two [Pt(terpy)] units.
