The desakota concept predated the conceptualization of peri-urbanization around the turn of the twenty-first century. The concept overlaps with peri-urbanization, but is conceptually somewhat different. This is in part because McGee formulated this concept before large-scale manufacturing took off in East Asia, driving what we now term peri-urbanization. Peri-urbanization has tended to be driven by large-scale point-based (industrial zones) investment in agriculture (although this is changing) and thus was often expressed in more polycentric urbanization patterns than desakota processes, which tend to follow more traditional urban settlement patterns and transportation corridors.

Peri-urban new urban settlement may leap-frog and thus exhibit low regional densities, but actually urban development (at the site, built-up level), tends to be high. David Dowell made this observation in his case study of land development on the fringes of Bangkok.

Non-contiguity is exhibited by the fact that urban districts often jump across space to include outlying economic zones or airports, as in the case of Ningbo's ETDZ or Beijing's Capital Airport, the latter a non-contiguous extension of Chaoyang District.
