    • In surface force apparatus studies, the force applied to macroscopic force probes is proportional to the liquid density distribution, as established in ref. 4. The authors proposed in ref. 12 and 14 that an AFM tip receives force proportional to the vertical gradient of density distribution, when the tip is small enough to an atomistic resolution in Δf distributions. The major conclusions in the current study do not depend on which interpretation is adopted; whether force is proportional to the density distribution or to the distribution gradient
