The effect of heating can be neglected. Considering the beam size and the thermal diffusion coefficient of the polystyrene, we estimate for the FWM experiment, a characteristic heating build up time 2×103 time faster than in the Z-scan experiment, with an on state of the excitation 4×103 times shorter. As a consequence, the heating effects are attenuated by a factor of two in the FWM experiment with respect to the Z-scan measurements, where it is negligible.
