    • Graus F, Delattre JY, Antoine JC, et al.: Recommended diagnostic criteria for paraneoplastic neurological syndromes. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 2004, 75:1135-1140. An international panel of neurologists reviewed the diagnostic criteria of PNS, recommended new criteria for consensus classification, reviewed all reported paraneoplastic antibodies, established the conditions to identify those that would be labeled well characterized. The proposed criteria should help clinicians in the classification of their patients and the prospective and retrospective analysis of PNS cases.

They conclude that an aggressive immunosuppression early in the clinical course should be considered in patients who have PNS even when there is no evidence of active malignancy.

    • Sakai K, Kitagawa Y, Saiki S, et al.: Effect of a paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration-associated neural protein on B-myb promoter activity. Neurobiol Dis 2004, 15:529-533. The authors report experimental data showing that Yo-Ab delivered into the cells inhibits the repression of B-myb. Because derepression of the B-myb promoter has been implicated in neuronal death, the results suggest the possible role of Yo-Ab in the pathogenesis of PNS.

In this study, the authors examined the effects of Yo-Ab and Hu-Ab on mouse brain-derived neurons in a primary culture system and found that these antibodies did not kill neurons but induced the expression of cell adhesion molecules and accelerated neuronal differentiation. However, these effects did not occur through the binding of the antibody to specific antigens, but through some other factors contained in IgG fractions.
