Shiraga S, Adamus G. Mechanism of CAR syndrome: anti-recoverin antibodies are the inducers of retinal cell apoptotic death via the caspase 9-and caspase 3-dependent pathway. J Neuroimmunol 2002; 132:72-82. This article provides experimental data suggesting that recoverin antibodies play a pathogenic role in paraneoplastic retinal degeneration.

-
Cross S, Salomao D, Parisi J, et al. Paraneoplastic autoimmune optic neuritis with retinitis defined by CRMP-5-IgG. Ann Neurol 2003; 54:38-50. The authors report 16 patients with optic neuritis, retinitis or both, selected from a large series of patients with anti-CV2/CRMP5 antibodies and paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis. Most patients had SCLC and 62.5% of patients with visual disorders also had other antibodies.
