The carbon fullerenes admit a continuum description in terms of two Dirac equations on the surface of a sphere.16 Lattice effects, such as scattering between the two equations, lead to corrections that scale as (a/R)2, where a is the lattice spacing (see Ref. 24). We do not find terms of a similar magnitude at the surface of a topological insulator.
