I distinguish Adler and Heckscher's type of community from other forms (gemeinschaft and gesellschaft [see Ferdinand Tonnies, Community and Association (Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft), trans. and suppl. Charles P. Loomis (London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1974; original 1887)]. Gemeinschaft is the traditional form of community. It rests on hierarchy and status. Duty and deference are assumed. Authority is legitimated by tradition and by charisma. Societies which reveal this type of community tend to be insular and inward-looking. The division of labour is not well developed. They are typified by what Adler and Heckscher define as 'thick trust'. Not so with Gesellschaft: in modern society, individuals act rationally, out of self-interest. Authority is, in Weberian terms, rational-legal; or bureaucratic. ndividuals form calculative associations rather than emotional ties.
